This University is the only (legal) one in Suriname. The University of Suriname
is 36 years old and it offers studies in the fields social, technological
and medical sciences.

providing the most essential information, the University also wishes to

Introduction
The University of Suriname was
founded on November 1, 1968. The decision of presenting a university to the
Surinamese nation as a gift was taken in 1966, on commemorating the
centanary anniversary of the "Staten van Suriname" (Parliament of
Suriname).
In the beginning of the Eighties the
University was closed for almost a year and it was opened again on October
17, 1983 under the new name Anton de Kom Universiteit van Suriname. The
then existing institutes of the University were reconsidered and some
changes were made in the period of 1983 to 1988.
A reevaluation was made of the existing institutes of the University in the
period between 1983 and 1988 and some changes were made.
It should be noted that the degrees used on this webpage are Dutch: drs.
(social sciences), ir. (technological sciences) and mr. (law); they are
equivalent to a masters degrees of the American education system.

The University Board is the highest governing body of the University and
has the entire responsiblilty of the organization.

Foreign students who meet the relevant minimum requirements,
must master Dutch language to be able to follow the classes. They may
submit a petition for that to the Ministry of Education via the University
Board.
