AdeKUS is awarded NWO consortium grant for Research into Collections with a Colonial Context
Decolonizing Epistemologies: The Reinterpretation of Existing Traditional Knowledge in Suriname
The grant is formally awarded to prof. dr. Shanti Venetiaan and will be managed by Dr. Cheryl White of the Faculty of Humanities, Department of History.
The Anton de Kom University of Suriname with the Suriname Museum and the Jodensavanne Foundation will work with Wageningen University and Research, Naturalis Biodiversity Center, the Wereldmuseum, the Allard Pierson, the Jewish Historical Museum to research objects taken from Suriname over one hundred years ago. This research allows historians, heritage specialist, ethnobotanist, archaeologist and Indigenous and Maroon (escaped enslaved descendants) peoples to study and reinterpret the function and meaning of objects. The research will culminate with the virtual (and/ or physical) restoration of historical objects to the Suriname Museum in Paramaribo, Suriname.
