Enhancing Academic Linkages and Research Capacity between U.S. and Suriname
Monitoring and Mapping of Tropical Forest Disturbance Field Workshop
17 – 28 February 2025

Take the opportunity to learn, research, and contribute to solving critical environmental challenges by participating in a three-day field-workshop in the Afobaka area, Suriname, South America.

 

Join Michigan Technological University’s College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science (CFRES) and Anton de Kom University’s Centre for Agricultural Research in Suriname (CELOS) for three (3) consecutive immersive workshops on Forest Field Research Methods including:

  1. Online pre-workshop (introducing key concepts via lectures and brief on research ethics),
  2. In-person 3-day field workshop (fieldwork, data collection, analysis, research ethics) and
  3. Follow-up online workshop (scientific writing, potential publishing, and presenting research results).

This hands-on program offers students the unique opportunity to gain practical skills in tropical forestry, GIS mapping, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable resource management while working alongside international experts. Participants will engage in field research in Suriname’s rich tropical forests, learn cutting-edge techniques, and develop valuable professional connections that can enhance their academic and career opportunities.

  • Biodiversity Conservation
  • Wood Science
  • Sustainable Natural Resource Management
