Biography:

Professor Robbert Bipat, MD, PhD, is a Surinamese physician, physiologist, and senior academic at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname (AdeKUS), where he has been affiliated since 1997. He currently serves as Full Professor of Physiology and Research Dean at the Faculty of Medical Sciences. Prof. Bipat earned his MD from AdeKUS and obtained his PhD in Medical Sciences from Hasselt University in Belgium. His doctoral research focused on renal physiology, specifically using isolated perfused rabbit kidney models to study kidney function.

Throughout his academic career, Prof. Bipat has held several leadership positions, including Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences (2017–2021), Head of the Department of Physiology, Chairman of the Education Board, and coordinator for online medical education. He currently chairs the Research Council of AdeKUS. His research interests include renal physiology, non-communicable diseases, diabetes, hypertension, nutrition, stroke, and medicinal plants, with a particular focus on health challenges in low- and middle-income countries.

Prof. Bipat has authored more than 130 peer-reviewed international publications, which have generated thousands of reads and several hundred citations. He has also contributed to national health policy through his involvement in the development of the HEARTS clinical protocols for hypertension and type 2 diabetes in Suriname. In addition, he is a member of international physiological societies, serves on an editorial board, supervises postgraduate research, and remains actively involved in civic and interreligious leadership. His career reflects a strong commitment to scientific excellence, education, and service to society.
