White Cheryl Nichole
Biography:
Cheryl White is working at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname (AdeKUS), Faculty of Humanities (FdHum) since 2014, where she is currently an associate professor. She began her career at the American Museum of Natural History, North American Archaeology Lab, in New York City, USA. Shortly thereafter she worked for Farwestern Anthropological Research Group, conducting commercial archaeological work in California. She completed her PhD in Anthropology with a focus in archaeology at the University of Florida at Gainesville, FL, USA in 2007.
At the AdeKUS she served as chair of the educational commission of the faculty for several years. She also assists with the development of archaeological policy as a member of the Archaeological Steering Committee for the Government of Suriname’s, Directorate of Culture.
Research:

- Ethnohistorical and African Diaspora Archaeology with a focus on Maroon ancestral settlements in Amazonia.
- Current projects:
-Decolonizing Epistemologies: the Reinterpretation of Existing Traditional Know-ledge in Suriname (NWA-project).
– Cultural Exchange with Coastal Carolina University’s International Gullah Gechee African Diaspora Conference; funded by the US Embassy Suriname.
– Tempati Creek Maroon ancestral settlement research funded by Sylvia de Groot, KITLV.
