JAGDEW, Eric Roopesh PhD

Biography:

Eric R. Jagdew is a reader at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname (AdeKUS). He is currently dean of the Faculty of Humanities, after having served as secretary of the faculty board for several years. He initially studied history at the Advanced Teacher Training College (IOL) and worked as a history teacher in Suriname. In 2008 he got a master’s degree in New History at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands after which he became a researcher at the Institute for Social Science Research (IMWO) of the AdeKUS. In 2014 he got his PhD degree at the AdeKUS on the topic of Indigenous and Maroon treaties in Suriname, between 1667 and 1863.

Since then, he has worked as director of the IMWO (2015-2018), interim director of the Bureau (2017-2019) and (interim) chairman of the University Board (2019-2020) of the AdeKUS.

Together with Maurits Hassankhan and Jerome Egger he developed the bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in History at the university.

His research specialty is Indigenous and Maroon history, especially peace treaties and land rights, but recently he has been interested in research of the post-Emancipation period in Suriname.

 

Research:
  • Historiographical Research: Surinamese Chinese in Suriname and the Netherlands (2024) (CI AdeKUS).
  • Pre-and Post-Emancipation: Abolition of Slave Trade and Slavery, State Supervision (1863-1873), Colonial Citizenship after 1873.
  • Biography: President of the Republic of Suriname Ramsewak Shankar (2025).
  • Current projects: Decolonizing Epistemologies (NWA-project), Slavery and Continuation (KITLV-project), Historical Database Suriname and Curacao (RU-Nijmegen).
  • Advisory Board: The (Post) Colonial University WUR (2022-2024), AdeK-Chair VU-Amsterdam (2024-2028).
