Jerome Lloyd Egger

EGGER, Jerome Lloyd MA

Biography:

Jerome Egger is a senior lecturer at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname (AdeKUS). He is currently head of the Department of History of the Faculty of Humanities.

He studied English and History at the Advanced Teacher Training College (IOL) in Paramaribo, Suriname. In 1987 he received a Fulbright scholarship and went to Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana in the USA to do his masters. When he returned to Suriname, he became the director of the Suriname Museum from 1990 to 1995 and was also affiliated as parttime teacher at the IOL and AdeKUS.

In 1995 he became a fulltime teacher at the IOL and remained a part-time teacher at AdeKUS. From 1998 to 2001 he studied for a PhD at Florida International University but did not complete. In 2006 he became a full-time teacher at AdeKUS. Together with Maurits Hassankhan and Eric Jagdew, he developed the bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in History at the university (AdeKUS).

His research fields include twentieth century Surinamese and Caribbean History and cultural history in general.

    • Historiography of the Afro-Surinamese population.
      Social-economic studies of the Afro-Surinamese population after 1873.

      • Political history of Suriname from 1949 to the present.
      • History of the Guiana region.
      • Biographical studies: Sitalpersad.
      • Current projects: Trade Unions in the Caribbean in the twentieth century (ongoing);
