‘ Health in All Policies ’

THE STUDY

WHO’s Health in All Policies (HIAP) emphasizes the importance of public health professional education in more than just the health sector. This Master of Science in Public Health delivers highly knowledgeable and motivated public health professionals who will contribute to the integration of Public Health in all policies of organizations within and outside of the health sector.

A graduate of MSPH can set up or conduct independent research in health issues on the basis of scientific knowledge, skills and ethically sound methods. The graduate can also develop programs that lead to disease reduction, improvement of health and well-being of individual and collective health.

THE STUDY PROGRAM

The Master in Public Health Program is an academic oriented study with a duration of 2 years.

In the second year, the student can choose from 2 streams, namely ‘Epi- Biostatistics’ or ‘Health Communication’. The study is completed with a Master’s thesis. The subject of the thesis is linked to the stream chosen by the student and has to contribute to Surinamese Public Healthcare.

This master's program uses an active learning didactic concept, in which students are stimulated to learn to think critically. In class education consists of activating teaching methods such as interactive lectures, group work, practical assignments and observations. Students are expected to actively participate in class.

In active learning, the emphasis is on discovery learning, self-study, competence-based, assignment and problem-based learning. This through a strong collaboration between students and teachers, where there is a continuous dialogue based on mutual respect.

AFTER THE PROGRAM

Career possibilities after the study

After completing the master’s degree, the graduate can develop/coordinate/implement/integrate Public Health programs at various health and non-health institutions such as the Ministry of Health and affiliated health institutions, other national and international health organizations, and also in non-health ministries and organizations to strengthen and support the inclusion of public health in their respective agenda’s. In this way Health in All policies, particularly the integration of intersectoral public health actions, will be given a push forward

Academic career possibilities after the study

After completing the master's degree, the graduate can conduct and publish his/her scientific research in peer reviewed journals and can actively participate in national and international scientific conferences. The graduate can also, when appropriate, be involved in teaching public health in various institutions including the university. The MSPH offers the graduate the opportunity to pursue a PhD degree.

ENROLLMENT

The following persons can apply for the Master's program in Public Health by means of an application form:

– Graduates with a BSc degree from other faculties of the AdeKUS or equivalent.
– Graduates with a comparable BSc degree from other training institutes.

  4. Additional relevant certificate training from recognized PH bodies
  5. Transcripts

Graduates with a comparable BSc degree from other training institutes submit the following additional documents:

  1. Portfolio
  2. Graduation work

Everyone goes through the evaluation process and needs approval from the evaluation committee for admission. This means that your submitted documents will be assessed and you will be invited for an interview.

N.B. An additional test can be taken on the basis of the findings of the assessment committee.
