Narinder Mohkamsing
Biography:
Dr. Mohkamsing (born in 1958, Suriname) is a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Humanities of the Anton de Kom University of Suriname (AdeKUS) since 2014.
He studied Indology at Leiden University in the Netherlands (1985-1990) and did his PhD on the Rhythmic Organisation in Ancient Indian Music (Leiden University 2003). After his PhD he returned to Suriname to do research on the Indo-Caribbean diaspora, culture, religion and music. He participated in Bidesia, an international research project on the emotional aspects of the immigration of Hindustanis from India, via Suriname to the Netherlands.
From 2009 to 2014 he was assistant professor in Hinduism at the (former) Leiden Institute for Religious Studies (LIRS), and from June 2013 in the same position at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU).
At the Faculty of Humanities, AdeKUS, he teaches various courses on religion, culture and society, philosophy of science, philosophy of language, and language & religion.
He is currently also the test coordinator for the Language & Communication departments of AdeKUS.
His research focusses on the Indo-Caribbean diaspora, culture, language, religion and music.
