Biography:

Sewberath Misser was born in Paramaribo, Suriname. His career has been driven by a commitment to research the promotion of healthy lifestyles, the advancement of public health interventions, health systems, and policies. His work has a strong focus on preventive and complementary medicine.

He earned a master’s degree in pharmacy from the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands, in 1994. Over the past three decades, he has worked as a community pharmacist in both the Netherlands and Suriname. In 2002, he completed the Master’s in Public Health program at Anton de Kom University in collaboration with the Tulane School of Public Health. Most recently, in 2024, he obtained his PhD from the Faculty of Medicine at Anton de Kom University, again in partnership with Tulane.

Beyond pharmacy practice, Sewbarath Misser has held leadership roles in several organizations, including President of the Board of Pharmacists, Rotary Club Paramaribo Residence, and the Suriname Auto Rally Klub. He has also contributed to committees dedicated to education, community development, medical policy, and public health. At Anton de Kom University, he is actively engaged in education and research within the Department of Pharmacology. His research interests span public health, drug utilization studies, pharmacoepidemiology, health technology assessments, optimization of drug interventions and therapies, compounding, natural drug development, and pharmacogenetics.

During the COVID‑19 pandemic, he served as chair of Suriname’s Outbreak Management Team, advising the Surinamese government on pandemic response. More recently, he has taken on the role of program leader for the Herstel Plan Zorg, a national health system reform initiative.

Outside of his professional life, he enjoys spending time with his family and maintains an active lifestyle through soccer, yoga, fitness, car navigation rallies, and small‑scale farming in Saramacca.
