Zijlmans, Wilco
Biography:
Professor Wilco Zijlmans has worked as a pediatrician at the Diakonessenhuis in Paramaribo, Suriname, since 1998, following his medical training at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He combines his passion for travel in Suriname’s interior with his role as a consultant for the Medical Mission, which delivers healthcare services in these remote areas.
As a Principal Investigator, he leads several research projects, including a large NIH-funded study examining the impact of environmental factors on mothers and children. He is Chair of the Pediatrics department at the Faculty of Medicine of the Anton de Kom University and holds a professorship there. His research interests focus on stress and protective factors in early childhood and their effects on neurological development and mental health. In addition, he serves as a local mentor to seven fellows in the UJMT Fogarty Global Health Fellows Training Program.
